Constructive criticism of your design work is the best way to grow. Learn to seek out criticism and don\u2019t take it to heart. Iterate on designs where required and go through the process repeatedly. When you\u2019re giving feedback, you need to consider who you\u2019re giving it to. Every designer is different, and your relationship with each person will be different. Have a bit of diplomacy when responding to designs. Mike Davidson gives some advice:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\u201cA good rule of thumb is: If a problem seems simple to you, you probably don\u2019t fully understand it. You certainly might, but you probably\u00a0don\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Here\u2019s a good resource about giving feedback: <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/mikeindustries.com\/blog\/archive\/2017\/06\/how-to-give-helpful-product-design-feedback\">How To Give Helpful Product Design Feedback<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Document your projects as you\u00a0go<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">If you are working on a project that\u2019ll be good for your portfolio, make sure to document the process as you go. Take photos of the journey and add them to a Medium draft, a Google doc, or whatever you prefer. Personally, I use a Medium draft to collect the photos taken, and I put notes to each as they happen. Collecting as you go saves time reverse engineering after the project is complete.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Join the Designership<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/thedesignership.com\/\">Designership<\/a> is a Slack community for designers and founders set up by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@mizko\">Michael Wong<\/a> and <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arthur_ftw\">Arthur Williams<\/a>. <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@nick_blanche\">Nick Blanche<\/a> and <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@McMastersCreative\">Richard McMasters<\/a> help run it. It\u2019s a great resource for new designers who want to ask questions about any design related topics. They have different rooms for inspiration, freelance, writing, jobs, and career advice. Get on there and ask a question. You\u2019ll be amazed how welcoming everyone is. The article was well received, but it was full of typos when I first published it. A combination of moving too quickly and not getting someone to proofread it caused the problem. I learned my lesson pretty quickly with some pretty harsh feedback. <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@anjimenon\">Anjana Menon<\/a> very kindly proofread it for me, and since then I\u2019ve used Grammarly Premium which has been a real help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The devil is in the detail for designers. Make sure your Linkedin profile, resume, portfolio, and blog posts are typo-free and professional-looking. For your daily work, get into the detail of the designs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Work for a business that has a good design\u00a0process<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Without a proper design process, it\u2019s unlikely that you\u2019ll be able to create the best possible experience. It\u2019ll take time, and you may not be designing for apps right away, but it\u2019s good to get your head into it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">If you have an iOS phone, get an Android one to get familiar with it and vice versa. My suggestion would be to get a Nexus 5x or a pixel phone as these phones follow Google\u2019s material guidelines pretty well. Here are Google\u2019s Material Design <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/material.io\/\">guidelines<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Here are the iOS design <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/design\/\">guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Meng To has a great <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/designcode.io\/iosdesign\">resource<\/a> for learning iOS design.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Become a \u201cwriter-downer\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">When reading up on design, write down what you learn. I do this now but not enough when I started. If you take notes, things stick better. When you\u2019re reading an article or studying, note down what you feel to be important.<br \/>\n<span class=\"long-quote\">\u201cWhen you write down your ideas you automatically focus your full attention on them. Few, if any of us can write one thought and think another at the same time. Thus a pencil and paper make excellent concentration tools\u201d. - Michael\u00a0Leboeuf<\/span><br \/>\nThe brain is split up into several areas that process all kinds of information. These areas process visual information, emotions, verbal communication, and lots more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Before we write something down, we evaluate the ideas and put them in order the information we receive. The process of doing this and the notes we write help the content stick in our mind. In turn, this helps when we need to recall the information in the future.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Become a design\u00a0author<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Come up with ideas, note them down, share them and push for a response. Read design blogs and write responses in the discussions. Talk to developers, researchers, QAs, delivery leads, product managers, and the rest. The more you ask questions of your coworkers, the better designer you\u2019ll become.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Don\u2019t get stuck at your desk plugged in all the time. Get up and walk the floor and ask a few questions. Get out socially with the team when you can.
