At parties, with relatives and with the odd customs official I often fall back to \u2018<em>I design how websites work<\/em>\u2019, but that is an incomplete definition and understates my real suite of skills. It is the team\u2019s way of empathising with your users and being inquisitive about what they want. In this way UX isn\u2019t a single step in a process but a skill that must be applied at each stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Let\u2019s walk through the full UX Stack to see what questions UX can help the team answer, starting with the initial strategy and scope phases where the concept is taking shape. UXD can answer some fundamental business questions:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--ordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>Do users need the product you are making?<\/li>\n<li>Do they want it enough that they will either pay for it or if it is free, spend time looking for it and learning to use it?<\/li>\n<li>Are you missing a key feature they will need?<\/li>\n<li>Are you spending time building features they will never use?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Next, once we have decided <em>what<\/em> to build we need to decide <em>how<\/em>. It is in the structure and skeleton phases where the project really takes shape and a good UXD can help answer some critical implementation questions:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--ordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>How should the content be organised so that users can easily find it?<\/li>\n<li>Will users find your app easy to use? Where do they get confused or lost?<\/li>\n<li>What content is needed and how should it be written to be most engaging?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Lastly we need to focus on the surface of the product. What is the product going to look like visually? This is an important step because a user\u2019s first impression is critical. UXD can help with the following:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--ordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>What should the visual tone of the product be?<\/li>\n<li>How do users feel when they see your product?
